This year’s Community Conversations series will focus on the history of the Settlement movement, the cultures of the groups with whom Settlement Association works, and what Settlement and Salem looks like today. Colonel Pyncheon craved land owned by another man – Matthew Maule so he took it. During the Salem Witch Trials, people were brutal and if you wanted your neighbour’s land, all you had to do to get it was to accuse them of witchcraft. Any suspected witch would have their land instantly taken away from them. In 1668, sea captain John Turner built a multi-room house on the Salem waterfront. Three generations of Turners lived in the home, increasing its size and the family’s wealth, until John Turner III lost everything and the house was sold to another mariner, Samuel Ingersoll, in 1782. Upon Ingersoll’s death, daughter Susanna inherited the great mansion, where she was often visited by her younger cousin, Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The area was an enclave for Eastern European immigrants, especially from Poland and Russia. Other communities served by Emmerton’s work included the Irish, Italian, Syrian, and African. Besides entertainment, it has a diverse economy with strong sectors in technology, fashion, aerospace, and international trade. LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An intruder was arrested after breaking in to the Los Angeles mayor's official residence early Sunday morning, officials say. A photographer was among those arrested during clashes between protesters and law enforcement on the University of Texas at Austin campus on Wednesday. Graffiti described as “hateful” has been painted on campus, the officials said. Work and classes will remain remote, and officials are considering keeping the campus closed for longer. House Speaker Mike Johnson called Wednesday for the resignation of the university’s president if she can't "bring order to this chaos." At one point during the demonstrations, tensions escalated as protesters refused to relocate and remove their tents and other prohibited items, a university official said.
The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association remains one of about 50 settlement houses that still operate in the United States. Caroline Emmerton’s organization has survived for over a century and will continue to help generations of immigrant families. After restoring the Turner-Ingersoll mansion, Emmerton continued to focus on saving threatened Salem buildings.

The actual Turner-Ingersoll Mansion is not known to be haunted, but the fictional house is haunted in a different way. Instead of being haunted by ghosts and spirits, the House of the Seven Gables is haunted by a curse that has followed the Pyncheon family through generations, plaguing them with bad fortune. Another reason the house may be thought of as haunted is, as I mentioned above, how Clifford moves though the house seemingly unseen. I know this is afictional story, but people in history have been known to do worse. The novel is set in the mid-19th century, but flashbacks to the history of the house, which was built in the late 17th century, are set in other periods. The house of the title is a gloomy New England mansion, haunted since its construction by fraudulent dealings, accusations of witchcraft, and sudden death.

Our visitor center, restrooms, Colonial Revival gardens, grounds, and a portion of our Museum Store are wheelchair accessible. Information is available for visitors that cannot access our historic house museums. The house was built on ground wrongfully seized from its rightful owner, Matthew Maule, by Colonel Pyncheon, the founder of the Massachusetts branch of the family. According to legend, at the time of his death Maule laid a curse upon the Pyncheon family.

Nathaniel Hawthorne, a relative of the Ingersolls, was infamous for being reclusive during his time living in Salem, in part because Hawthorne himself exaggerated his reputation. Hawthorne was more inspired by the way "seven gables" sounded than what the house looked like. As he wrote in a letter, "The expression was new and struck me forcibly... I think I shall make something of it."[6] The idea inspired Hawthorne's novel The House of the Seven Gables. Start your visit to this historic cemetery at the 1665 Pickman House Welcome Center to get oriented and shop for gifts. Begun in 1637, Old Burying Point is one of the oldest cemeteries in the country and the oldest of eight in Salem. Two judges who oversaw the witch trials are buried here — John Hathorne (great-great-grandfather of Nathaniel Hawthorne) and Bartholomew Gidney, along with numerous notable Salem residents.

In 1864, Hawthorne traveled to New Hampshire with President Franklin Pierce. He died on May 19 and is buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, MA. By 1846, the Hawthorne family was living back in Salem with Una (1844) and Julian (1846). It was during this time that he would begin to write The Scarlet Letter—his first critically acclaimed success in publishing. Residents in the surrounding Derby Street neighborhood were the primary beneficiaries of the settlement house.
It, like the cemetery, is intended to be a place of quiet and contemplation. But let us separate fact from lore as we walk through the city’s beautiful tree-lined streets and historic neighborhoods. Salem’s history is filled with enterprising people who brought riches and opportunity to its citizens. Let’s bypass those good folks for now and peek at the rest of the story….
In an evening update, the Texas Department of Public Safety said that 34 arrests had been made by law enforcement on the campus as of 9 p.m. The university closed its campus Wednesday evening as LAPD began arresting demonstrators. No protesters or officers have been reported injured, police said. "The university is a private campus and the group had been violating some of their orders. It was a trespass at that point and we assisted with the arrests," Los Angeles Police Captain Kelly Muniz said during a briefing. "After they fraudulently obtain title to your home, they can sell the property, they can borrow against it, but it is important to remember these are hypotheticals," said Arash Sadat, a real estate attorney.
